If you're reading this I hope you're all well.
This year the kids all chose their own costumes - based on Mum's sewing capabilities - and we made our own costumes. The eldest daughter Miss 8 knew straight away that she wanted to be the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. We recently took the kids to see Disney on Ice and she just loved the queen.
We decided on a tulle skirt - and based ours on the many images on google. Without following any instructions, this is what we ended up with...
I tacked the felt heart onto her plain tee, made the crown and attached it to a headband using pipecleaners. We also used another pipecleaner for the collar. Using short pieces of white tulle I simply pinned it in place. The floor-length tulle skirts do tend to tangle a bit, and yes we used a LOT of tulle to make it really poof out and to get the colours more or less opaque. She did win one of the 'best costumes' in the school :)
I had one mister 6 tell me he wanted to be an Angry Bird... okay... not really a book character, but fortunately our school is pretty free in that department. I did manage to find a tutorial using felt - for anyone that doesn't know, I love felt and have made numerous Santa Bags for all the children in our family... here's the tutorial I found. It was super simple, I did change a few bit and pieces, I added tabs to the shoulders rather then stitching them together, and added a strip of elastic at the sides. I wanted them to hang freely and as we made ours smaller, I wanted to make sure they'd fit kids of various ages and sizes. Here's my little man in his (we skipped the hat from the tutorial, it didn't turn out so well lol )
And the other mister 6 tells me he wants to be Mike Wazowski - you know, the little green monster on Monsters Inc? So in sticking with a similar felt makeup I did find a tutorial here. I wasn't entirely happy with this one though so tweaked it. I also added some quilt padding as I did in the Angry Bird. It helps to keep its shape. I also stuffed the horns and stitched them with the shoulder tabs. Also elastic sides to fit all. And here's my other little man all ready to go... complete with Monsters University cap :)
I had a lot of fun making these, we plan on making some more tulle skirts, and I did make a stack of superhero felt face masks which I'll have to round up and share on here also. xox
